“Dinosaur”

Video courtesy of Universal Pictures

This project was for an audio test that was given to me for a sound design position at Microsoft. I had one week to complete three separate shorts by replacing all of the sound and music in a scene.

In this video, I recorded many of the sounds in this scene including road flares, footsteps, rock sounds, and vocalizations (provided by my awesome wife, Jamie). I created crushing and biting effects by recording celery stocks ripping, watermelons being broken into, peanut shells being crushed, and grapefruit juice squirting out (my poor, wet microphone).

I also manipulated explosion sound libraries, samples of animals that I tweaked with pitch shifters and layered, and synthesized sounds to create the devastation around this challenging scene. I then created a very simple orchestra temp track to imply where a score might fit in the mix.
